What Freight Class Is and Why It Determines Your LTL Rate

Freight class is a standardized classification system created and maintained by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA). It assigns every type of commercial freight to one of 18 classes — from class 50 (the cheapest to ship) to class 500 (the most expensive). LTL carriers use freight class as the primary variable in their pricing matrix, which is called a tariff.

When you request an LTL quote, the carrier applies a rate per hundredweight (CWT) that corresponds to your freight class and the origin-destination lane. A class-50 shipment might be priced at $12/CWT on a given lane, while a class-200 shipment on the same lane could be priced at $45/CWT or more. That's a 3.75x difference in rate for the exact same weight and distance — purely because of classification.

The reason class matters so much to carriers is that it's a proxy for how "easy" or "difficult" freight is to handle and transport profitably. Dense, sturdy, stackable goods are cheap to move because they fill trailers efficiently and rarely cause problems. Bulky, fragile, high-value, or hazardous goods cost more to handle, take up more trailer space per pound, and create higher liability exposure. Freight class is the mechanism carriers use to price those differences systematically.

For shippers, the practical implication is straightforward: accurate classification is not just a compliance requirement — it's a direct cost control lever. Systematic misclassification in the wrong direction means you're overpaying on every shipment. And if your carrier's inspector reclassifies at delivery, you pay a reclass fee on top of the corrected rate.

Bottom line: Freight class is not optional or approximate. It is a precise determination based on four physical and commercial characteristics of your commodity. Know your class before you quote, and verify it when your commodity changes packaging, density, or stacking arrangement.

The 18 Freight Classes: From 50 to 500

The NMFTA publishes 18 designated freight classes. They are not evenly spaced — the system is weighted toward lower classes where most standard commercial freight falls. Here's the full class table with representative commodities:

Most commercial freight falls between class 50 and class 150. Classes above 200 are relatively rare and typically involve commodities that are extremely low density, extremely high value, or both. If your freight is regularly classifying at 200 or above, that's a strong signal to review packaging, crating, and density before the next shipment.

The Four Classification Factors

The NMFTA determines freight class using four standardized factors. Understanding them is essential because they're the same factors a carrier inspector uses when reclassifying your freight at the dock.

1. Density — The most influential factor. Density is the weight of the shipment divided by the cubic footage it occupies. Higher density means the freight is easier to load efficiently, so it earns a lower class and a lower rate. A dense, heavy pallet of steel takes up less floor space per pound than a light, bulky pallet of foam — which is why steel rates a class 50 and foam rates a class 400+. Density is also the factor you can most directly influence through packaging decisions.

2. Stowability — How easy the freight is to load alongside other cargo in a mixed LTL trailer. Rectangular, palletized freight with a flat top stows easily. Irregularly shaped freight, freight that can't be stacked on top of, or freight with orientation restrictions (this side up, do not stack) has poor stowability and earns a higher class. Freight that requires exclusive use of a section of trailer gets treated similarly to FTL for pricing purposes.

3. Handling — The labor and equipment required to safely load and unload the freight. Standard palletized goods handled with a standard pallet jack score well. Freight that requires special equipment, two-person handling, or that is fragile enough to require extra care scores poorly. Hazardous materials, livestock products, and items that require climate-controlled handling all carry handling penalties.

4. Liability — The carrier's risk exposure if the freight is lost or damaged. High-value per-pound commodities (electronics, jewelry, pharmaceuticals, art) have higher class designations because the carrier's potential liability per cubic foot is disproportionately high. Perishables, hazmat, and freight that can damage adjacent cargo also carry liability premiums.

In practice: Density drives the majority of class determinations for standard commercial freight. If you know your shipment's weight and dimensions, you can calculate density and estimate class with high accuracy. For commodities where stowability, handling, or liability are significant — pharmaceuticals, oversized machinery, hazmat — consult the NMFC directory directly or ask your broker to verify.

How to Calculate Freight Density — With Formula and Example

Calculating density is straightforward. The formula is:

Density (lb/cu ft) = Total Weight (lb) ÷ Total Volume (cu ft)

And: Volume (cu ft) = [Length (in) × Width (in) × Height (in)] ÷ 1,728

The 1,728 divisor converts cubic inches to cubic feet (12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728).

Worked example: You're shipping a palletized skid of packaged hardware. The pallet measures 48 inches long × 40 inches wide × 54 inches tall (including the pallet itself). Total weight is 680 lb.

  • Volume: (48 × 40 × 54) ÷ 1,728 = 103,680 ÷ 1,728 = 60 cubic feet
  • Density: 680 lb ÷ 60 cu ft = 11.33 lb/cu ft
  • Freight class per the density table: Class 85 (10.5–12 lb/cu ft range)

Now change the scenario: the same 680 lb of hardware is repackaged into a more compact crate measuring 48 × 40 × 36 inches.

  • Volume: (48 × 40 × 36) ÷ 1,728 = 69,120 ÷ 1,728 = 40 cubic feet
  • Density: 680 lb ÷ 40 cu ft = 17 lb/cu ft
  • Freight class: Class 70 (15–22.5 lb/cu ft range)

That packaging change dropped the freight class from 85 to 70. On a 1,000-mile lane with a typical LTL carrier, that difference can reduce the rate by $3–$7 per hundredweight — which on a 680 lb shipment (6.8 CWT) amounts to $20–$48 per move. Multiply that across dozens of weekly shipments and you're looking at a meaningful annual freight savings from packaging optimization alone.

Important note: always measure the actual dimensions of the freight as it will ship — including packaging, crating, and any overhang. Carriers measure at the dock, not from your spec sheet.

NMFC Codes Explained

NMFC stands for National Motor Freight Classification, and the NMFC code is a specific numeric identifier assigned to a commodity or commodity group by the NMFTA. Every commodity that moves via LTL has an NMFC code, and that code maps to a freight class (or to a density-based class scale, which requires you to calculate and declare density at the time of shipment).

NMFC codes are 4–6 digits, often with a suffix. For example, NMFC 46040, sub 1 covers certain types of automotive parts. The code tells the carrier exactly what commodity you're shipping and provides the authoritative class determination. When you provide an NMFC code on your bill of lading, the carrier's rate engine uses it directly.

A few things shippers get wrong about NMFC codes:

  • Codes change. The NMFTA publishes updates quarterly. A code that was accurate two years ago may have been revised, split, or reclassified. If you've been using the same codes for more than a year without checking, verify them.
  • Sub-codes matter. Many NMFC codes have multiple sub-classifications (sub 1, sub 2, sub 3, etc.) based on packaging type, density range, or condition. Sub 1 and Sub 2 for the same base code can have different classes. Specifying the wrong sub-code is a common reclassification trigger.
  • Density-based codes require your input. An increasing number of NMFC codes are classified as "density-based," meaning the class is not fixed — it depends on the density you calculate and declare. If you declare the wrong density (or fail to declare it), the carrier will measure and reclassify.
  • Product description must match. The product description on your BOL must accurately describe the commodity to which the NMFC code applies. Vague descriptions like "auto parts" or "general merchandise" invite carrier scrutiny and potential reclassification.

The NMFC directory is published by the NMFTA and available by subscription. Many brokers and 3PLs maintain access and can look up codes for shippers. If you're unsure of your NMFC code, ask your broker before tendering — not after delivery.

The #1 Cost Trap: Reclassification Fees

Reclassification — also called a reclass — occurs when the carrier's inspector determines that your freight's actual class differs from what you declared on the bill of lading. It's one of the most common and costly surprises in LTL shipping, and it's almost entirely preventable.

Here's what happens in a typical reclass scenario: You book a shipment at freight class 70, expecting to pay $18/CWT. Your freight arrives at the carrier's service center. An inspector measures the dimensions, weighs the freight, and determines the actual density puts it at class 100. The carrier issues a "variance" or "inspection report." The corrected rate — class 100 at $28/CWT — is applied retroactively to the full shipment weight. On top of that, most carriers charge an inspection fee of $75–$150 and an administrative fee for processing the variance. You also typically lose the ability to dispute the rate after acceptance at delivery.

Reclassifications can go in either direction — carriers can reclassify upward (higher class, you pay more) or downward. In practice, upward reclassification is far more common, partly because carriers have a financial incentive to catch underclassification, and partly because shippers who round down or guess on class are typically rounding in their own favor.

The most common reclassification triggers:
  • Declared density doesn't match measured dimensions at the dock
  • Wrong NMFC sub-code for the packaging type actually used
  • Commodity description on BOL doesn't match the NMFC code cited
  • Freight height changed (taller pallet = lower density = higher class)
  • Items stacked or palletized differently than the shipper's density calculation assumed

The financial impact adds up quickly. A single reclass on a moderate-weight shipment can add $200–$500 to the invoice. A shipper with 50 shipments per month experiencing a 10% reclass rate is looking at $12,000–$30,000 in unexpected annual freight charges. That's before considering the administrative burden of disputing individual variance notices, which LTL carriers make deliberately tedious.

Prevention is the only cost-effective strategy. Accurate classification, verified NMFC codes, precise dimension measurement, and clear BOL descriptions eliminate nearly all reclass exposure. There is no shortcut.
