LTL and FTL Defined in Plain Language

Less-than-truckload (LTL) and full truckload (FTL) describe how a carrier allocates space on a trailer. The distinction drives pricing, handling, transit time, and risk — so getting the mode right matters on every shipment.

LTL means your freight shares trailer space with other shippers' cargo. A carrier picks up your pallet or pallets, consolidates them at a hub or cross-dock with freight from other customers, and moves everything toward its collective destinations. You pay only for the cubic footage and weight your freight occupies — typically calculated as a rate per hundredweight (CWT) multiplied by your freight class. LTL is ideal for shipments that don't fill a trailer: generally anything under about 10,000–12,000 lb or fewer than 10–12 standard pallets.

FTL (also called TL, truckload) means you're booking the entire trailer — 48 or 53 feet of space — whether you fill it or not. The carrier picks up at your dock and drives directly to the consignee. You pay a flat rate per mile or a negotiated lane rate, regardless of how much freight actually rides in the trailer. FTL is the standard choice for shipments above roughly 20,000 lb, time-sensitive high-value goods, or commodities that can't be co-mingled with other freight.

The cost structures are fundamentally different. LTL pricing scales with weight, density, and freight class. FTL pricing scales primarily with miles driven and current spot-market or contract rates. That difference is why choosing the wrong mode can add 20–40% to your freight spend on a given lane.

Key rule of thumb: If your shipment is under 10 pallets and under 10,000 lb, start with LTL pricing. If it's over 15 pallets or over 20,000 lb, start with FTL. Everything in between needs a break-even analysis.

On a standard 53-foot dry van trailer, usable capacity is roughly 45,000–47,000 lb of legal gross weight and approximately 2,500–2,700 cubic feet of space. In practice, most FTL shipments average 35,000–40,000 lb when shippers optimize loading. The LTL network, by contrast, operates most efficiently on shipments in the 500–10,000 lb range — that's where carriers price aggressively because they can fill trucks from multiple shippers.

As weight climbs above 10,000 lb in a single shipment, LTL rates per hundredweight often start to climb or level off because carriers are giving up capacity they could sell to others. Meanwhile, FTL rates don't change just because your load is heavier. At roughly 12,000–15,000 lb on most domestic lanes, the LTL quote can equal or exceed what you'd pay for a dedicated truck.

Volume also matters independently of weight. LTL carriers sell space by the pallet position and linear foot. If your freight is bulky but light — think foam packaging, upholstered furniture, or aerated food products — you may be charged a "volume" or "deficit" rate even if you're under 10,000 lb, because you're consuming floor space that could otherwise carry denser cargo. In those cases, FTL can become competitive at lower weights than the standard benchmarks suggest.

Abstract numbers are easy to dismiss. A concrete example makes the break-even tangible. Let's use a real-world scenario: 8 pallets of packaged hardware (freight class 70), weighing 14,000 lb total, shipping from Atlanta, GA to Dallas, TX — roughly 780 miles.

LTL quote: At freight class 70, a typical published rate on this lane runs $18–$24 per CWT. At 14,000 lb (140 CWT) and a rate of $21/CWT, the base rate is $2,940. Add a fuel surcharge (currently averaging 22–26% of base on most carriers), and you're at roughly $3,600–$3,700 all-in before accessorials. If the destination requires a liftgate, add $75–$150. Total: approximately $3,700–$3,850.

FTL quote: Atlanta to Dallas is a well-covered lane with strong carrier density. Spot rates on this corridor currently run $1.80–$2.20 per mile. At 780 miles and $2.00/mile, the FTL rate is $1,560 — all-in, no fuel surcharge separate from the rate (fuel is typically embedded in FTL per-mile pricing at current market). Total: approximately $1,550–$1,720.

The FTL option is roughly $2,000 cheaper in this example — even though the shipper is only filling about 30% of the trailer. That's the power of the break-even analysis: the crossover happened well below the weight where most shippers assume FTL makes sense.

The lesson: Never assume LTL is cheaper just because you're not filling a truck. On high-weight, high-class freight, FTL frequently wins even at 40–50% trailer utilization. Always run both quotes on shipments above 10,000 lb.

The equation flips for lighter, lower-class shipments. Take 3 pallets of canned goods (freight class 60) at 3,500 lb from Atlanta to Dallas. LTL base rate at $16/CWT × 35 CWT = $560, plus fuel surcharge = roughly $680–$720 all-in. An FTL truck on the same lane still costs $1,550–$1,720. In this case, LTL saves the shipper over $800.

Speed and Handling Differences

Cost isn't the only variable. Transit time and freight handling are often decisive, especially for time-sensitive or fragile commodities.

FTL moves faster and handles less. A dedicated truck picks up at your dock and drives to one destination. No intermediate stops, no cross-docking, no freight transfers. On a 780-mile lane like Atlanta to Dallas, a well-run FTL move can deliver in 24–36 hours door to door. Because the freight is never touched between origin and destination, damage rates on FTL are significantly lower than LTL — typically 1–3% of shipments versus 4–7% in the LTL network.

LTL involves multiple handoffs. Your freight may be picked up, sorted at an origin service center, linehaul'd to a hub, cross-docked and sorted again, and then delivered by a local driver at the destination. On a medium-haul lane like Atlanta to Dallas, expect 2–4 business days, with some carriers running 3–5. Each touchpoint is an opportunity for damage or delay. Standard LTL claims run higher because of this handling complexity — LTL carriers cap liability at $0.50–$25.00 per pound depending on the carrier and commodity, which often leaves shippers undercompensated for higher-value goods.

The handling difference also shows up in what freight is appropriate for each mode. Machinery, precision equipment, fragile glass, or high-value electronics are strong candidates for FTL regardless of weight, because the risk of LTL damage doesn't justify the cost savings. Palletized, well-protected industrial goods — hardware, food products, paper, consumer staples — transit LTL with manageable risk when properly packaged.

The 7,500–15,000 lb Crossover Zone

The range between 7,500 lb and 15,000 lb is where mode selection is genuinely ambiguous and where shippers most often make costly default decisions. Most shipping managers pick LTL in this range out of habit, assuming a partial load isn't worth a full truck. But the math often says otherwise.

Several factors push toward FTL even at these weights:

  • High freight class (85+) — LTL rates escalate sharply; a class-100 shipment at 12,000 lb can price comparably to a dedicated truck
  • Expedited delivery requirements — LTL's 3–5 day transit often can't compete with 24-hour FTL when a production line is waiting
  • Fragile or high-value goods — damage exposure on LTL can exceed the cost difference between modes
  • Temperature-sensitive freight — even "standard" reefer LTL involves more handling and temperature excursion risk than a dedicated reefer truck
  • Long-haul lanes (1,000+ miles) — on extended lanes, LTL transit can stretch to 5–7 days while FTL delivers in 2–3
  • Freight requiring special handling (hazmat, oversized items, stacked or side-load restrictions)

Several factors push toward LTL in the crossover zone:

  • Low freight class (50–70) — LTL pricing stays competitive and FTL rates per mile remain fixed regardless of your load weight
  • Flexible delivery windows — if the consignee can receive over a 4-day window, LTL transit times aren't a constraint
  • Well-palletized, durable goods — lower damage risk makes LTL handling acceptable
  • Short-haul lanes (under 400 miles) — LTL cross-docking is minimal and transit stays within 1–2 days
  • Cost pressure with predictable demand — shippers who can plan ahead and consolidate shipments get better LTL contract rates

In the crossover zone, the answer is almost never obvious from the weight alone. Every additional data point — freight class, lane, timeline, commodity type — changes the equation. The only reliable method is running both quotes and comparing total landed cost, including accessorials and any cargo insurance premium.

A Decision Framework for Choosing Your Mode

The framework below is designed to be used at the shipment level, not as a blanket policy. Apply it every time a shipment falls in ambiguous territory.

Step 1: Filter by weight. Under 5,000 lb? Default to LTL unless a specific factor overrides. Over 20,000 lb? Default to FTL. Between 5,000 and 20,000 lb? Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Filter by freight class. Class 70 or below? LTL is likely competitive. Class 85 or above? Run an FTL quote before assuming LTL is cheaper. High-class freight in the 10,000+ lb range almost always benefits from an FTL comparison.

Step 3: Filter by transit requirement. Does the consignee need delivery within 48 hours? LTL rarely delivers that reliably across medium or long-haul lanes. Move toward FTL or a volume LTL (VLTL) solution with guaranteed transit.

Step 4: Filter by damage risk. Is the commodity high-value, fragile, or temperature-sensitive? Calculate the damage probability cost on LTL. If expected damage cost (damage rate × shipment value) exceeds the FTL premium, FTL wins even at lower weights.

Step 5: Get both quotes and compare total delivered cost. Include base rate, fuel surcharge, all accessorials, and any cargo insurance. The mode with the lower total delivered cost wins — not the mode with the lower base rate.

Pro tip: Build a simple spreadsheet that calculates total LTL cost (base rate × class × weight + fuel surcharge + accessorials) vs. total FTL cost (miles × per-mile rate) for your most common lanes. Run it monthly as rates shift. A mode that was optimal in Q1 may not be optimal in Q3 when carrier density changes.
