Who actually ships refrigerated LTL? The list is broader than most people assume:

  • Food manufacturers and distributors moving partial pallets of produce, dairy, meat, or frozen goods between distribution centers or to regional buyers
  • Pharmaceutical and biotech companies shipping temperature-sensitive drugs, vaccines, reagents, or clinical trial materials that don't fill a full trailer

If your shipment weighs somewhere between 150 and 10,000 pounds and needs to stay between a defined temperature range — typically anywhere from -20°F for frozen goods up to 65°F for items that just need to stay cool — refrigerated LTL is the mechanism that makes that possible without committing to 40,000 pounds of capacity you don't need.

Why Reefer LTL Is Harder Than Dry LTL

Dry LTL is a mature, highly competitive market. Dozens of national and regional carriers offer it, transit lanes are densely covered, and the technology for tracking and quoting has been commoditized. Reefer LTL operates under a different set of constraints — and understanding them is the first step to managing shipments more effectively.

Carrier availability is narrower. Not every LTL carrier operates a reefer fleet. Among those that do, some limit their temperature-controlled LTL service to specific lanes, certain days of the week, or minimum shipment sizes. Door openings at intermediate stops matter. Every time a trailer door opens at a stop, the trailer's interior temperature can fluctuate — especially in summer heat. On multi-stop consolidations, your freight may be exposed to ambient temperatures multiple times during a single transit. Carriers should have protocols for minimizing door-open time and for monitoring temperature continuously, not just at pickup and delivery.

Key fact: The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Sanitary Transportation Rule requires carriers transporting human food to maintain adequate temperature controls during transport. Shippers are responsible for specifying temperature requirements clearly in writing — and for verifying that carriers are complying. Verbal agreements aren't sufficient.

How Sailing Schedules and Consolidation Work for Reefer LTL

One of the most important practical differences between dry LTL and reefer LTL is that reefer LTL often operates on sailing schedules rather than daily pickup availability. A carrier may run a consolidated reefer load from Atlanta to Dallas only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for example. If your freight is ready on a Wednesday, you wait — or you pay for a more expensive solution.

This schedule-driven model exists because reefer LTL is harder to consolidate profitably. Carriers need to accumulate enough compatible freight to justify running a temperature-controlled trailer on a lane. Unlike dry LTL, where any two pallets can share a trailer regardless of content, reefer LTL requires matching freight by temperature band, delivery window, and geographic route.

The consolidation process for reefer LTL typically works like this:

  1. Your freight is tendered to a consolidation hub or terminal, where it is held in a temperature-controlled staging area
  2. The carrier or consolidator accumulates compatible shipments heading in the same direction within the same temperature band
  3. Once sufficient freight is assembled, it is loaded onto a reefer trailer in the sequence of stops along the route
  4. The trailer departs on its published sailing date and makes stops at intermediate terminals or delivery points
  5. At each terminal, freight may be transferred to a local reefer vehicle for final delivery

Transit times for reefer LTL are often longer than the equivalent dry LTL transit because of this consolidation waiting time. A shipment that would take two days via dry LTL might take three or four days via reefer LTL if it misses a sailing. This is a critical planning consideration for shippers whose products have tight expiration windows.

When evaluating reefer LTL options, always ask the carrier or broker for the sailing schedule on your specific lane — not just the quoted transit time. A quote that says "2–3 business days" can mean very different things depending on when your freight actually departs the origin terminal.

Maintaining the Cold Chain on Multi-Stop Loads

Cold chain integrity is the non-negotiable requirement in refrigerated LTL. A product that is frozen at your dock and arrives thawed — even partially — represents a financial loss, a potential food safety violation, and a claims process that is almost always more expensive in time than in actual dollar recovery.

At origin: Pre-cool your freight to the required temperature before tendering it to the carrier. Handing over warm product and expecting the trailer's refrigeration unit to bring it to temperature is a common and avoidable mistake. If your product enters the trailer at 45°F when it should be at 35°F, the unit may not bring it down to setpoint before it reaches the next stop.

During transit: Require continuous temperature logging. Data loggers that record temperature every 5–15 minutes throughout the journey provide a documented chain of custody. In the event of a claim, this record determines whether the excursion happened in your facility, during loading, in transit, or at delivery — which directly affects who is financially responsible.

At intermediate terminals: Freight transferred between trailers is vulnerable. Ask carriers specifically how they handle interline transfers for reefer freight — is it moved through a temperature-controlled dock, or is it staged on an open dock while awaiting the next trailer?

At delivery: The receiver should take and record the internal temperature of the product at the time of delivery, before accepting the shipment. If there is a problem, this is the moment to note it on the delivery receipt. A clean delivery receipt with no exception noted makes a subsequent temperature claim extremely difficult to pursue.

Documentation tip: Specify temperature requirements on the bill of lading, not just in verbal instructions to the driver. The BOL is the legal contract of carriage. If it doesn't say "maintain 34°F–38°F," you have limited recourse if the carrier set the thermostat to 45°F.

Cost Considerations vs. Full Reefer Truckload

The fundamental tradeoff in reefer LTL is cost versus control. Here is how to think about it:

A rough rule of thumb: if your reefer LTL shipment starts to approach 10–12 pallets or 20,000+ pounds, you should price a full truckload option. The cost difference may surprise you — and the reduction in handling risk, transit time, and temperature excursion potential often justifies the incremental cost.

For pharmaceutical freight or any product where a temperature excursion means disposing of the entire load, the risk calculus shifts even further toward full truckload. The premium for a dedicated reefer is cheap insurance when your product costs $50,000 a pallet.

Packaging and Labeling for Temperature-Controlled LTL

Your packaging is part of your cold chain. In a reefer LTL environment, where freight is handled at multiple terminals and potentially transferred between vehicles, packaging that maintains temperature integrity reduces your exposure even if there are brief ambient air exposures during loading and unloading.

Insulated pallet covers and thermal blankets can provide 2–4 hours of temperature protection during transfers and staging — enough to cover most intermediate handling operations. For pharmaceutical freight, gel packs or dry ice inside the secondary packaging can extend protection further.

Corrugated inserts and thermal liners inside cartons reduce the rate of temperature transfer for individual items. For frozen freight, wax-coated boxes provide moisture resistance as the product sweats during temperature changes.

For labeling, reefer LTL freight must be clearly marked at the pallet level with temperature requirements. Use large, clear labels on at least two sides of the pallet that include:

  • Required temperature range (e.g., "Keep Refrigerated: 34°F–38°F")
  • Product description and any relevant hazmat or food safety codes
  • Shipper name, consignee name, and origin/destination addresses
  • PO or reference number visible without moving the freight
  • Any handling instructions ("Do Not Stack," "This Side Up," etc.)
  • Expiration date or best-by date where product-specific
